The Eastern Cross League started at the weekend with a round at Hog Hill on Saturday and a second at Springfield (Chelmsford) on Sunday. The hot weather made for fast, dry courses rather than more normal wet muddy cyclocross conditions.
On Saturday, the U10/U12 course was along the start/finish straight and then winding around the middle by the big tree, before a climb of the pump track. First off were the U10s for 3 laps with LVYCC represented by Anna Lloyd and Eve Prenelle. Eve was doing her first cyclocross race using her mountain bike and looked confident finishing just off the girls podium. Anna in her first year as an U10 was battling it out with two boys and ended with 3rd place (and first girl). Next was the U12s for 7 laps with 6 LVYCC riders, Daniel Lloyd, Owen Prenelle, Samuel Leslie, Max Rethman, Carys Lloyd, and Thulani Mlambo. A CC Ashwell rider got away in a very furious start and it looked as though Owen and Daniel were going to have a battle for 2nd. Unfortunately, Owen’s chain came off twice so Daniel pushed on to get 2nd place and Owen fought hard to make up time and take 3rd place. Samuel was next home in 5th place and then Max, Carys, and Thulani finishing close together in 8th, 9th, and 12th places.
On Sunday, in bright sunshine the U10/12 course was around a playing field but with a steep bank to go up and down. The U10s race was 3 laps and LVYCC were represented by Anna Lloyd and Ethan Leslie. Anna tried to overtake into first place at the end of the second lap, but faded on the last lap to take second place. Ethan rode well to take third place. In the U12s race of 5 laps were Daniel Lloyd, Samuel Leslie, Carys Lloyd, and Nathaniel Marsh. They finished in 2nd, 6th, 13th, and 16th places.
Alex Dale also took 2nd place in the youth race..
