A great time was had by all who attended Beastway South Winter Race 1 last weekend at Beckenham Place Park.
This is a brand new venue for cycling in South London’s largest park and the Beastway Team have been working closely with Lewisham Council over the past year to put in place cycling trails as the park has been regenerated.
Beckenham is easily reached by train on the Thameslink network. The park is a former golf course and has proper hills, valleys and woodland. The new course is planned to be 3.7km long with 60m climbing per lap. The Beastway Team are putting in new singletrack without using any kitty-litter and making use of some unofficial paths already there.
On a lovely, bright but breezy morning we met up at Beckenham Place Mansion and signed on in possibly the most beautiful and grandest sign-on room ever!
There was a good turnout of riders, both young and old, from clubs all over London.
The under 10s and 12s rode a 1.2km long course starting on the parkland next to the Mansion, which was exposed to the wind. They then rode up the steep hill and into mature woodland following a new singletrack cut through dry leaves and ivy. The youths rode the same course 3.6km long course as the adults.
Overall, it was a great event and we have to congratulate the Beastway Team for their dedication in setting up the trails and creating a new race event. We look forward to the next races on January 27th and February 17th.
