East and South East Regional Cyclocross Championships – Welwyn 3/12/17

This weekend was Regional Championships weekend – when every BC region round the country holds their Regional Championships. My Twitter feed last night was filled with podium pictures – several of which featured LVYCC riders.

Our regional championships were held at Stanborough Park, Welwyn, hosted by Welwyn Wheelers. The course was a hard sloggy one with long drags, uphill hurdles and challenging corners in the slippy conditions. It rained a little and had been raining overnight – the mud wasn’t enough to clog the bikes but enough to make taking the corners at speed a tough test of judgement.

It was good to get the different combination of riders you get when you combine the London and Eastern Leagues, with a good smattering of Central League riders as well.

Oliver Beale and Anna Lloyd starred in the U10 race with Oliver making storming to an overall victory look easy, when I’m sure it actually wasn’t, and proving just how much he has improved this season. Anna was just as smooth, with plenty of power, taking second place, first girl.

We also had podium presence in the U12s with Carys Lloyd finishing 3rd overall, 1st girl. She was hot on the tails of the notorious Amey brothers from Team Darenth for a large proportion of the race. Fantastic ride. .

In the Youth race Max Bolton finished 4th overall, after some late attacks moving him up from 7th as the opposition started to fade on the tough course. Alex Dale finished just outside the U16 top 10 after a week of illness. Noah Hobbs rode very strongly to finish 3rd U14 with Owen Prenelle also making the U14 top 10 in 7th. Eleanor Bolton battled it out to finish on the podium as third U14 girl. In the Junior race Max Blake was the only LVYCC rider and finished well up in 11th.

Not letting the adults down Bruce Mackie finished 7th in the V50s, unfortunately just outside the prize money. Plus road coach, James Woodbridge, made his cyclocross debut finishing 47th in the V40s.

Well done to all of you, not just those mentioned above, it was a hard day of riding – that required power, grit and determination (and wellies to keep the feet warm, plus plenty of bike washing at the end of it…)

Thank you to Welwyn Wheelers for their sleek organisation and hospitality.
