Mallorca Roadworks……..

Day two of the training camp – a slightly easier day than the 75 miles of yesterday. A gentle ride out of Alcudia along the seafront towards Pollenca, then taking a left turn to head inland. The gathering point was a large roundabout just outside Pollenca. This is the roundabout that is used as the turning point at the halfway stage of the 8 mile time trial.

However, big dumper lorries, road surfacing machines, rollers (not the rollers we see at races!) and a small army of workmen were busy resurfacing the road. After pondering the situation the time trial was back on course with the start and finish near the out of bounds roundabout and the half way point at what should have been at the start and finish! Hope you can follow that….!

The rider order was arranged with the younger riders going first moving up the age range with a couple of the coaches going last. Set off at 30 second intervals over 20 riders set off to see what they could do. Everyone achieved very respectable times with Sam recording the fastest time of around 19 minutes. Three riders broke the 20 minute marker with all the others following not long behind.

The older riders then formed into 3 teams of 4 riders to complete the time trial again as a team pursuit.

The short trip back to Pollenca saw everyone meet at Cafe 1919 for lunch. We started sitting outside….

….but after a short while the rain started spitting. At this point two groups of riders set off to conquer Formentor. The remaining folk retreated indoors whilst the shower moved quickly on by.

After a short while the remaining riders also set off in the same direction. The team car followed once the drivers lunch had been eaten – first to be seen were the Juniors who had riden over the first long climb down the other side before returning – they were heading back in the direction of the hotel. Group 2 (mostly the under 16’s) were no where to be seen……until the cafe at the lighthouse. If you have not travelled to the lighthouse it provides spectacular cliff top views and rather dramatic drops. This is Group 2 at the light house just about to set off on the return leg…..

Before reaching the final descent back into Pollenca the rain re-appeared but this time heavier and for a longer spell. Bruce provided some valuable advice about such conditions – fresh rain would not have washed away the grease on the surface so cornering with extreme care and keeping a safe distance between riders would help make the descent as safe as possible.

The riders all acted on the advice and a safe descent was had by all. The rain had not eased up so it was a wet ride back to the hotel via the sweeping bay. For those of you at home today should be the only wet day according to the forecast. Even with the rain it was a very pleasant 16 degrees. The forecast for tomorrow is clear sunshine with a high of 18 degrees!

Diner was as usual at 7pm followed by a self made quiz. Teams of 4 had to devise 5 questions that then then asked to the other teams. Topics ranged from cycling to maths! Prior to the quiz riders were briefed about the ride tomorrow – pretty much a long ride with several climbs. Somewhere in the region of 95 miles for the Juniors………also Sam was presented with his prize for winning the time trial.

That’s today’s postcard from Mallorca…….
